5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
Genesis 6:5–8 (ESV)
This is one of the saddest passages in the Bible. I say this because it illustrates the nature of human depravity mingled with demonic spiritual depravity and its seemingly unlimited downward spiral into every form of wickedness. To think that we could become so depraved that God would regret creating us and be moved to destroy everything He had created is a tragic commentary on the human race. So it was, and so it will be when the days of grace have come to an end.
Verses 1-4 is one of the most debated passages of the Bible with at least three or four interpretations being proposed by scholars. However, I will offer my own opinion. It is not possible to do a full exposition on demonology here, so bear with me and think this through. I know that these verses sound a little like some Syfy movie plot, or Ancient Aliens TV episode, but as has been noted, fiction is often not far from the truth. The “sons of God” in verse two refers to fallen angels and demons, and this is supported in other Bible passages.
The Bible makes clear that human sinfulness is rooted in the sin nature, the will to be our own god, to choose our will over God’s will. Any time we disobey God or choose our way over His we are, in a figurative sense, eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. But the sinful nature of man is manipulated and used by the devil and his fallen angels to advance evil upon the earth and ruin creation. Verses one through four refer to one of the most wicked and unthinkable ways demonic spirits exploit the depravity of humans.
Dr. Ed Murphy, author of The Handbook for Spiritual Warfare acknowledges that it has been known throughout the ages that demons can and do take human form and engage in sexual activity with human beings. The technical terms for this are incubus (demon in male form engaging with a human female), or succubus (demon in female form engaging with a human male). This kind of activity is practiced in Satanic circles, in cases of demonized people, or other pagan occultic religions. While it is debated as to whether or not these demons can produce the necessary biology to impregnate or bear children, the Scripture says that the Nephilim (the wicked giant race of ancient times) are the progeny of these forbidden unions. It is true, what Jesus said about angels not engaging in marriage, but apparently, when angels take on human form, the ability to conceive children is there as well.
I said all of this to try to help us see the lengths to which Satan and his demons will go to destroy us and our children. When we reject God and open our lives to the full indulgence of evil, the only choice left for God is to destroy us in order to wipe this wickedness out of existence. Our only salvation is in Jesus. Our only wisdom is God’s. Our only power over evil is the word of our testimony and the blood of the Lamb (Rev. 12:11).
